Information

Welcome to the webpage of the Department of Mathematics of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The Department of Mathematics is one of the oldest Departments of AUTH and the School of Science which was initially was known as School of Physics and Mathematics. The first students were enrolled in November 1928. The university was found by the law (n. 3341/14-6-25) which was voted on 5th June 1925.

The first announcement was about the first admission of students in the Department of Mathematics od the School of Physics and Mathematics of AUTH and was published in the Newspaper of Balkasn in 18th October 1928 (n. 3684). After the necessary introductory examsn, which took place in November of the same year, 5 students were admitted, in a Department which had only two faculty members. The first students graduated in 28th April 1933.

The Department of Mathematics became indepedent in 1982-83. Todat the Department of Mathematics has about 1500 active students and 30 teaching member. The Program of Studies covers all the classical areas of Pure and Applied Mathematics.

The primary objectives of the Department of Mathematics are:

  • teach undergraduate students in understanding fundamental concepts of mathematics and developing mathematical thinking
  • provide high level and quality mathematical knowledge which responds to the development of the science of mathematics and
  • teach students to comfortably handle issues that require the ability of quantitative and qualitative perception as well as logical analysis, whether it concerns issues of theoretical approach or application in other scientific fields

During the first six semesters of studies the Program of Studies offers courses that cover a wide range of knowledge both in pure and applied mathematics. Courses in Computer Science are also offered in order to make the studies familiar to the modern technology. In the last 3 semesters, a student with a variety of courses options from different areas of the mathematical science, is able to create its own mathematical profile. Student’s guide on these choices must be, among others, his eventual desire for postgraduate studies in a specific specialization.

The Department of Mathematics has a Graduate Program of Studies in Mathematics from 2002-03 until today and which awards Master degrees in the following specializations:

  1. Pure Mathematics
  2. Statistics and Modeling
  3. Theoretical Computer Science and Theory of Systems and Control

The Department of Mathematics participates in joint Graduate Program of studies “Networks and Complexity” of the Departments of Economics, Mathematics, Biology, Geology which works since the academic year 2018-19.

The Department of Mathematics also has Postgraduates Studies.
